HonestReporting Announces Winner of 2008 ‘Dishonest Reporter of the Year’ Award

From an HonestReporting Press Release:
HonestReporting is proud to declare Daily Mail columnist Lauren Booth as the 2008 winner of the annual ‘Dishonest Reporter of the Year’ Award. Each year, HonestReporting awards the prize to a member of the media who most distorts coverage of the Middle East.

Booth distinguished herself in 2008 by serving as both a reporter and a participant on the first Free Gaza Movement’s publicity-seeking sea voyage to Gaza in August. She then made her intentions clear during an interview with the BBC: "I dearly want to go to Gaza again to support the Palestinians and to show the world the reality of what's going on there."

Show the world she did, when she was photographed shopping for groceries in a well-stocked supermarket. At the same time, she gave a series of interviews shamelessly describing Gaza as a "concentration camp," and calling the situation in Gaza "a humanitarian crisis on the scale of Darfur."

“Journalists like Lauren Booth, who repeat Hamas propaganda over and over, actually encourage more Palestinian violence,” said HonestReporting Managing Editor Simon Plosker. “Hamas leaders hear it as support and come to believe the world is on their side when they launch attacks on Israel.”

Other award winners include Time magazine for Worst Caption: the Boston Globe for Sloppiest Fact-checking; and the Guardian for Most Questionable Terror Links.
